Summer Literacy Camp

We are truly excited to be a community partner with Cedar Grove, Red Oak and Swift Creek Elementary Schools. Our summer reading program provides six weeks of exciting adventures while reading. Since 2018, the children have dived into the deep blue sea, enjoyed camping adventures, as well as dug into the dirt all through fun and exciting books. Local school families of children entering 1st & 2nd grade are invited to join us for a program that provides two delicious meals along with activities to build their self confidence and help maintain reading skills throughout the summer break. Field trips are taken to the Imperial Center and a treat to Krispy Kreme for a little summertime sweet. As the camp comes to an end we celebrate the students’ accomplishments at a celebratory community picnic.

We always welcome volunteers to assist with reading 1:1, helping with crafts, and much much more. The funding for this program is provided through the monies raised at our Lucy McKeel 5K and a grant from the Duke Endowment. For more information on how you can help support this program, we invite you to contact Red Oak UMC.
