Dr. Simpson was ordained a Deacon in 1995 and an Elder in 1998 and has served in the North Carolina Conference at the Gaston Charge in Northampton County from 1994 to 1998, Englewood UMC in Rocky Mount from 1998 – 2000, Bethel UMC from 2000-2004, Front Street in Burlington, Resurrection UMC in Durham. NC, Mt. Bethel in northern Durham and Efland UMC.
While serving in Burlington he attended The University of the South, Sewanee, TN and received a Doctor of Ministry studying the Eucharist, and how it forms our spirituality in the tradition of “the table” in the life of the Church.
Dr. Simpson has led beginning and advanced courses in Spiritual Formation at Duke Divinity School, Duke University for 10 years and assisted teaching classes Methodist History, Polity and Practical Discipleship at Duke Divinity School.
Currently, as an adjunct faculty member at North Carolina Wesleyan University, he teaches part time in the department of religion. He has published on book the spiritual formation of the Eucharist titled “Who Moved the Table.”
Dr. Simpson serves on the District Committee on Ministry and considers himself an orthodox theologian who believes the Church is at its best around the divine table, celebrating the Eucharist. My vision abides in the apostolic community’s interpretation of the liturgy of the Church. He continues to be an active brother of the Order of Saint Luke and disciplines his life in the Benedictine life of prayer.
Robert’s family includes his wife Christy and son Alex. Robert is an avid runner, plays golf and reads extensively.
